How We Conserve Wildlife

Vamizi Island and the surrounding sea harbour some of the most significant and endangered habitats and wildlife in the western Indian Ocean, with over 180 species of unbleached coral and over 400 species of reef fish.
Since Vamizi was founded, there have been concerns that the area would one day come under pressure from indiscriminate and unsustainable fishing and other environmental impacts as a result of an increasing population. Conservation and community development initiatives have been implemented since the lodge opened resulting in the maintenance of a near pristine environment.
Vamizi Island has maintained a permanent conservation team that support conservation activities to actively monitor wildlife populations and resist environmental degradation. There is a strict no fishing policy within the sanctuary that extends 3kms from the beach.
This team, under the supervision of the WWF Vamizi Project, provides support to the local community fisheries council for the protection of a marine sanctuary, as well as overseeing day to day conservation activities.
