Working with WWF
In 2010 the Board of Vamizi Island entered into a partnership with WWF in recognition of the importance of the region of marine conservation in East Africa.
This innovative partnership aims to :-
• Create a Protected Landscape with full community participation in the management of marine sanctuaries
• monitor turtles along the island beaches
• undertake in-depth marine surveys
• implement an effective Conservation Action Plan to maintain the quality of marine life on and around Vamizi and neighbouring islands
• plant vegetation to reduce dune erosion
• undertake routine monitoring of ecological processes to establish a reliable baseline of coral reef quality to show progress of conservation action
• host two WWF staff members based on the island to implement the project
• gather information on sea temperature and water quality as part of a long-term assessment of the potential impace of clilmate change and oil/gas exploration and extraction.
• build and manage a new marine conservation centre on Vamizi Island, with the dual purpose of marine conservation research and interpretation to encourage links with research groups both in the region and internationally.
This is the just the start. We have every expectation that this partnership will lead to bigger and greater initiatives to protect this pristine environment.
